In West Africa, approximately five million farmers in tropical regions are responsible for producing over four and a half million tons of cacao beans. These beans are then used to generate an industry worth eighty-three billion dollars, which is controlled by two dozen multinational corporations. While the profits of these companies have significantly increased since the 1980s, thanks to the focus on "shareholder's value", the income received by the farmers has decreased by a factor of up to three. Additionally, the effects of global warming have made cacao farming even more challenging and perilous, making it less attractive for future generations. It is crucial to find an alternative to this unsustainable situation.
